JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES

linesmanActon Soccer Club is run by volunteers, and we always welcome help. Following is a list of positions, the first three are ALWAYS OPEN.

Referees.

        • Referees are unusual in that they are the only paid position in Acton Soccer Club.
        • The Club provides training, which results in OSA certification to Class 4. This happens in about February to April each year.
        • The Club also provides the referee’s first uniform.
  • Payment is based on a standard payment per match, which is determined by the age group of the players.
  • A referee can officiate at a match if they are 2 years older than the players.
  • Minimum age is 12, for referee or for linesman.
  • Contact: the head referee, Pat Graham (519) 853 0603.

Coach.

Coaches are critical to the children’s enjoyment of the game. Depending on the age group they are responsible for:

  • The coordination of practices (Under-12 and up).
  • Ensuring all players are notified of the schedule for practices and games.
  • Ensuring all players (and parents) understand the rules of the game, conduct that is expected.

The Club provides coaching clinics (provided we have a Coaching Coordinator) to allow first-time coaches to understand the basics, and to provide refresher training for returning coaches to help hone skills, provide new ideas for matches and practices.

Contact: the head referee, Tom Neal (519) 853 5673 or by email.

Convener.

Conveners ensure that the team selection happens as per the Club policy. One way to do this is to select the appropriate number of balanced teams, omitting coaches children. Coaches are then randomly allocated one of the three balanced teams, they add their own child, teams are now set.

Mini Soccer (U5 - U10):

  • Team selection in these age groups is done by the Registrar, so coaches and convener don’t have to worry about this!
  • Defining how fun day will run, recruiting volunteers to help set up the day, communicating the schedule to coaches and delegating to the coaches to notify all their players.
  • Notifying all coaches of the schedule for the season, and notifying them of any change.
  • Acting as central point of contact for questions and concerns by parents and coaches.
  • Organizing the end-of-season championship/skills day in much the same way as fun day at the beginning of the season.

11-a-side (U12 and older):

  • Conveners ensure that the team selection happens as per the Club policy. For the 2004 season, this means selecting three balanced teams, omitting coaches children. Coaches are then randomly allocated one of the three balanced teams, they add their own child, teams are now set.
  • Communicating the fun-day schedule to coaches and delegating to the coaches to notify all their players.
  • Notifying all coaches of the schedule for the season, and notifying them of any change.
  • Gather up Game Sheets from Acton and from out-of-town teams. (This varies by age group.)
  • Acting as central point of contact for questions and concerns by parents and coaches.
  • Maintaining league tables (as relevant, varies by age group) to define how the end-of-season championship will be played.
