UNDER-16 Boys end the 2006 outdoor season.

In a closely contested final in Acton on 27 August, Caledon edged previously unbeaten Bolton1 Brazil by a score of 2-1. Caledon had finished third in the league, while the yellow Bolton team had won every match until this point. There was a great deal of tension as the game reached its close, but the Bolton team could simply not find the scoring touch that had come so easily to them in their previous matches

Third place went to HEADS with a 5-4 nailbiter victory over Grand Valley.

Congratulations to all teams (who showed up) for a well-played cup championship. 19 games and no red cards!!!! The final standings in the Cup competition were:

5th: Bolton 2 England; 6th: Acton 2 Dennys; 7Th : Rockwood 1; 8th: Rockwood 2;
9th: Acton 1 Ogre ; DNF: Bolton 3 Welded Tube.

UNDER-14 BOYS: 22 August 2005

Toth Motors - - 2
Rockwood Red - 5

High-flying Rockwood Red (with only one defeat all season) travelled to Acton to face plucky but unlucky Toth Motors. The game started with some passionate play by both teams at Acton High School. The bumpy ground came into play frequently, but in the early stages seemed to favour Rockwood. Unfortunately, your reporter has lost the game sheet, so I can't comment on the names of the Rockwood players, but the number 18 was a brilliant imposing force in midfield.

It took several attacks before Rockwood scored. This was a thunderous shot into the upper corner of the goal that had all present gasping. As the half drew on, Rockwood converted a high percentage of chances to take a 4-0 lead, while the Acton chances were saved, blocked by defenders, or the ball bobbled unfavourably at the last minute. On four occasions, Gordon McKeon or Nick Victoria were put through by perceptive passes, but to no avail.

For the second half, the Acton formation changed from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, and some players moved around to try to pressure Rockwood's defence a bit more. The move paid off, and most of the second half was played in the Rockwood end of the field. This half was a stirring performance by Toth Motors. The defence was field-marshaled by Nic Querques, the midfield engines of Nick Eagan, John Spehar and Tris Hannah were firing on at least 8 cylinders, and the forward play of McKeon and Victoria was energetic and effective.

As the second half reached the ten-minute point, Acton gained the benefit of some pushing in the Rockwood defensive end, resulting in a spot kick. John Spehar's effort was on target, and parried out by the goalie, by Spehar was John-on-the-spot to tidy up and start the Toth account.

Over the next few minutes, chance after chance fell Toth's way, but Rockwood were able to keep the score stable, until Gordon McKeon was able to run onto a loose ball and tidy it away into the lower left-hand corner. At 4-2, Acton could now sense their superiority might be enough to rescue some points.

Alas, it was not to be. Rockwood had been able to break out of their half on a few occasions, and then Ryan Faber (our second-half goalie) took command. Energetic covering play by Shane Frechette, Andrew Grabauskas, Kevin Lee also helped to save the day. But as Acton pushed forward for a glorious third goal, the Acton goal was exposed, and some clinical finishing on a Rockwood breakaway made it 5-2.

The Toth Motors team clearly has the potential to cause some upsets in the season-ending championship tournament, if the ball bounces a bit more kindly.

Unbiased reporting by Ian Watson, the completely-objective coach of Acton's Toth Motors (the Knights in White Uniforms).

UNDER-14 BOYS - 28 June 2005 at Elizabeth Street

BNR Towing - 6
Toth Motors - 3

Scorers
BNR Cameron Shortt, Tyler Einmann, Connor Tonkin (2), David Tysoe (2)
Toth Nick Eagan, Rory Watson, John Spehar

The match featured two Acton teams, with BNR being one of the high fliers in the league (along with the Grand Valley and Hillsburgh-Erin teams) while Toth are competitive, and still developing.

The game began with both teams short-handed, and Toth carrying some injuries. Despite this, the Toth defence played bravely in the face of BNR's imposing strike force, while defensive pressure by Kevin Lee and Nick Querques were generally enough to force quick, inaccurate shots by the BNR strikers. A storm of shots sailed over the bar, and those that were headed goal-ward were impressively stopped by the safe hands of Shane Frechette. Eventually, though, BNR overcame their nerves and started to pour shots on target, and took a 2-0 lead through David Tysoe and Connor Tonkin.

Toth were not to be discouraged, and Nick Victoria's tireless running, and selfless passing, put Nick Eagan through on everal occasions. Each time, the Toth team was thwarted by remarkable defensive play, often by the hard-working Tysoe or Einmann.

The rewards for perseverance came late in the first half, with Eagan scrambling in a goal from a corner kick, and Rory Watson equalising with a powerful arced shot from outside the penalty area.

As the second half started, it was all square, but as the half went on, BNR became stronger while the Toth boys tired. At one point, with the score at 3-2, Toth had a penalty kick as a chance to equalise, but the BNR goalie was up the challenge and made the save. A late consolation by John Spehar - who created the goal with a strong run from the half-way line - was not enough in the face of determined and effective attack by BNR.
